Village of Cooperstown
County: Otsego County
Population: Less Than 5,000
City Hall: (607) 547-2411
The Village of Cooperstown utilized GIGP funding through a grant award from the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation to retrofit Main Street with permeable pavement, permeable sidewalk pavers, bioretention and stormwater street trees. This green street project has helped to revitalize downtown by improving walkability along Main Street, as well as to improve water quality in the Willow Brook and Otsego Lake.
This project has greatly improved the walkability of Main Street by replacing sidewalks in poor condition with many trip hazards. It has helped to create a more dynamic Main Street in safety, functionality and appearance. New programs on Main Street have started since the completion of the project seeing more residential traffic during the typical visitor season. An example would be our "Music on Main" program sponsored with support from the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, providing daily musical entertainment in the village-owned Pioneer Park located on Main Street.
The total project costs for the Main Street Sidewalk Replacement and Green Infrastructure portion of the project was $998,260 with change orders during the project, with a bid total of $911,711. The village received $636,854 in EFC funding for new rain gardens along Main Street, which included iron fencing and replaced former tree boxes that were a major trip hazard along Main Street. Also, $100,000 was secured by Senator James Seward. An additional $38,250 was allotted through Village of Cooperstown funding for the historic lamppost restoration for retrofit with LED fixtures and repainting of the lampposts.
