The Claddagh Commission's goal to provide a work environment for their clients by purchasing and restoring the old Angola Theater was the catalyst that instigated the revitalization of the Village of Angola. The Claddagh Commission is a non-profit organization that provides residential and day services to disabled adults.
They trained and employed fifteen of their clients to run concessions, operate the film, act as ushers, and perform general maintenance.
The reopening of this historic theater has breathed life back into the downtown of Angola and created a new momentum for downtown revitalization. Although the Claddagh Commission provided the primary funding, there were generous contributions from various other sources. They raised funds by private donations and creative fundraising strategies, such as selling off all of the old theater's seats. The project also received funding from county and state legislators.
The whole community became involved in all aspects of the project. Volunteers of all ages donated their time, labor, and money to complete this enormous task. Since the reopening, new businesses have opened in the area, with more expected in the future. This has provided a positive social and economic impact not only on the employees of the theater, but the community as a whole, and is continuing to inspire further change within the community.
