Glen Park Wall Reconstruction (2011 LGAA)

Village of Williamsville (Winner)
County: Erie County
Population: 5,000 to 10,000
Village Hall: (716) 570-2472

The purpose of this project was to repair a collapsed wall section along Ellicott Creek, and to also restore access to Glen Park from the Village's Main Street. Poor drainage had caused erosion behind the historic wall and had undermined the wall structure. The Glen Park Committee held fund raising events to finance the project.

The Village used interlocking stacking concrete blocks instead of poured concrete, saving $100,000 in construction costs. Using this wall system also enabled the Village's Department of Public Works (DPW) employees to perform the labor. The wall was faced with stone to match the existing wall. Preliminary costs estimates for the project were in the $170,000 range. In the end, the total cost for repair of the wall and paved walkway was only $35,000.

This improvement has added a beautiful entrance to the Village's Glen Park while also providing scenic viewing of Glen Falls. This project was also an experience and confidence-building opportunity for the Village's DPW department. Village residents, as well as others in surrounding communities, are amazed and impressed with the outcome. There is a real appreciation for the work undertaken by the Village's own employees to make the reconstruction a reality.
