Commuter Park Lot Construction and Expansion (2014 LGAA)
Village of Monroe
County: Orange County
Population: 5,001 to 10,000
Village Hall: (845) 783-4440
The Village of Monroe owned a piece of property that was being used as commuter parking for the Bus route to New York City. In working with NYS DOT and Coach/Short Line, the Village was able to secure the necessary funds to redevelop this parking area. Adjacent to the lot was a piece of vacant property the Village also purchased to incorporate an expansion to the new commuter lot.
This project increased commuter parking from 45 parking spots to 119 spots. Not only are they used for commuter parking, but parking for local businesses in the center of the Village on weekends and evenings.
Both parking lots were designed and constructed using green technologies. Both lots are parallel to two ponds which are the center of the Village. Commuter lot one was designed with a rain garden. The parking lot drains into the rain garden to catch all contaminants. Lot 2 was designed and constructed using porous asphalt. Again, all contaminants are prevented from draining into the ponds.
Both projects were constructed using the Village work force. Lot one was completed 10 % under budget. The village was also able to bill back their time for a profit to the Village of $15,000. Lot two was constructed also with Village work force for a cost savings of $85,000.
